TELL THE PREMIER: END SEGREGATION OF CHILDREN WITH DISABILITY IN NSW SCHOOLS
Thousands of children in NSW schools continue to be segregated from the general school population despite the human rights breach and the overwhelming evidence that supports inclusive education.
Students with disability are being subjected to a heightened risk of abuse, neglect and exploitation, low expectations and a pathway that sets children up for a life of social isolation from the general community.
Despite the efforts of many to work with the NSW government to embrace transformational change that ends the segregation of students with disability, there remains no commitment from the government to create a roadmap for change that works towards removal of these harmful practices.
To add insult to injury for many people with disability, the Department of Education released a video highlighting the benefits of segregation in recognition of the International Day of People with Disability 2020 (IDPWD). The release of the video “Jorden’s story: Penrith Valley School” to support the awareness of IDPWD is a blatant slap in the face to the intention of this day and to many students with disability across NSW. The continued support of the segregation of children with disability within our education system is at the heart of the attitudinal barriers that the International Day of People with Disability is trying to counteract.
